Background of the Study

Urban flooding has become a recurrent challenge in many rapidly urbanizing areas due to inadequate drainage systems (Okeke, 2023). In Uvwie, the poor design and maintenance of drainage infrastructure have contributed significantly to the accumulation of stormwater during heavy rains, leading to widespread urban flooding (Ibrahim, 2024). This situation affects residential areas, disrupts transportation, and hampers economic activities. The study investigates the relationship between inefficient drainage systems and the frequency and severity of urban flooding events, examining how urban planning deficiencies contribute to waterlogging. By analyzing infrastructure limitations and the socio-economic impacts of flooding, the research aims to propose solutions that enhance urban resilience and reduce the adverse effects of flooding in Uvwie (Chukwu, 2023; Adeyemi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Uvwie Local Government Area experiences frequent urban flooding due to poorly designed and maintained drainage systems (Ibrahim, 2024). This deficiency results in significant property damage, disruption of economic activities, and public safety concerns (Okeke, 2023). The current drainage infrastructure is inadequate to manage heavy rainfall, leading to recurrent flood events that severely impact the community. This study addresses the need to identify the causes of drainage failure and propose improvements to mitigate urban flooding (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To investigate the impact of poor drainage systems on urban flooding.

2. To assess the adequacy of current drainage infrastructure in Uvwie.

3. To recommend improvements for effective urban flood management.

Research Questions:

1. How do poor drainage systems contribute to urban flooding in Uvwie?

2. What are the impacts of urban flooding on the local community?

3. What improvements can be made to drainage infrastructure to reduce flooding?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Poor drainage systems significantly contribute to urban flooding.

2. Inadequate drainage infrastructure is associated with increased flood frequency.

3. Improved drainage systems reduce the incidence and impact of urban flooding.

Significance of the Study

This study offers crucial insights into the impact of drainage deficiencies on urban flooding in Uvwie, informing infrastructure improvements and urban planning strategies. The findings aim to enhance flood management practices and reduce economic and social disruptions caused by flooding (Ibrahim, 2024; Okeke, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining the effect of poor drainage systems on urban flooding in Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Drainage Systems: Infrastructure for channeling excess water away from urban areas.

2. Urban Flooding: Flood events occurring in urban environments due to inadequate drainage.

3. Infrastructure: The fundamental facilities and systems serving a region.
